Where do I start??

Okay...I've spent close to $700 in the last 2 months just getting my pool balanced and get rid of the green algae. I'm almost there and my pool is blue again I'm a new pool owner and learning as I go along. I've floc'd, vacuumed to waste, algaecide'd, sodium hydrogen carbonated, shocked...etc.

After my bank account has been depleted from purchasing all the expensive chemicals...I'm finding out the following:
1. Use muriatic acid to lower the pH
2. Use baking soda instead of buying sodium hydrogen carbonate ($.50/lb vs. $1.50/lb)

My question...what other substitutions can I use to save more money?

Also, I see that sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) raises alkalinity and muriatic lowers alkalinity and lowers pH. Doesn't this create a flip-flop between high alkalinity and lower pH and vice versa? I dunno...I just want to learn how to NOT spend all my money at the pool supply store on overpriced chemicals.

What these guys are really saying here is :Read the books already written for the very purpose.
There is hardly room here, to write them again, and hardly justified.
