Low Pressure

Postby ccswfl » Tue 08 Sep, 2009 19:36

Hope someone can help, my pool pressure is very low, when searching I found this forum. I was very hopeful after reading the post in the tread that when we reached into pump opening that we would find junk clogging up the system but there was nothing, I have become one of Fl's unemployed & can't afford a service call, please are there any ideas as to what else we can check? Thank you

You could have a blockage in one of the pipes or valves before the pump. This could happen if you vacuumed a lot of leaves or small sticks out of the pool recently.

Low Pressure

Hey there....I just came across this blog and thought I'd chime in. I had the same low PSI problems that many folks out here seem to have. I was down to zero psi on my T-60 filter. I tried all of the basic solutions - looking for obstructions, changing filters, etc, and never really had any success. Then I decided to take the pump apart and have a look at the impeller, where I found a bunch of leaves jammed in there. I cleaned it out with a cheap steak knife and my fingers - a one minute job. After lubing the seal and reconnecting the pump...Bingo. PSI was back to 12 - 15 range within minutes. After reading the posts here about this problem it seems that there are a lot of people who have gone through this. If you're thinking that the pump/impeller is something a pro should do and are reluctant to do yourself, I am telling you that it is a very simple job and go ahead and give it a try.

Low Pressure

Our pool was flooded with mud during a flash flood a couple weeks ago. We have managed to clean it out pretty well, but now the pressure is down to 10psi. The weird thing is that it's only low when it's in pool mode, but is fine in spa mode. We have cleaned the main valve, replaced the filters, made sure all the leave baskets are clear. Is there anything else we can check? Is there a way to clean the intakes at the bottom of the pool (deep end)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

In my case it was a snake curled up inside the impeller. EW.

Glad I found this thread, before which I had not thought of obstructions in the impeller. Word to the wise: When vacuuming your pool manually, ALWAYS go through the skimmer basket, as opposed to bypassing it.

Hi my pool problem is that the pressure goes down to zero when we connect the pool cleaner. THe pump and filter are brand new. and the filter has good pressure ~12psi when in filter mode. Any ideas?

Stacy, it's likely mud is plugging the pump impeller. It needs to be cleaned out, which takes a few minutes when you know how.

Krystle, is this the first time you use the vacuum? The vacuum hose needs to be filled with water before you connect it, otherwise the pump will suck air (result: no pressure) and won't be able to prime itself.

Try to fill the vacuum hose from the filter outlet before connecting it. Keep all of the hose under the water level, lift one end out only to connect it as quickly as possible.

I came home the other day to find my pool cleaner out of the pool and sucking air. I turned the pump off, put the cleaner back in the pool. When I turned the pump back on I no longer have any filter gauge pressure and I can't get the suction back in the pool. Help.

Wow, gotta love it, second click after my search "hayward pump loss of pressure" and lo and behold, this is the problem. Pine needles plus the remains of a white nylon gasket, 1.5 - 2 inch diameter about 3/8 inch in tubular length. Hmmm, no way this got through the skimmer basket. Now, where to find the replacement part. Ideas?

Thanks. I was having a similar problem. Opened the top of the sand filter and found the center tube loose and the seat was broken by about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Reversed the tube after emptying the sand and replaceing it with new sand. Still had the low pressure problem. Reached in and found the debri behind the catch basket like others have said. Went back to the correct psi immediately.

What a great post. My pump pressure dropped dramatically and my cleaner had no pressure. i was going to call the pool guy, but after reading this forum took out the basket and checked the pump impeller - full of pine needles and hair. Problem now solved!

Great Posts....My basket just ahead of the pump is worn and cracked. My back pressure had recently dropped from 16 psi to about 6 psi. The open crack in the basket had allowed debris to enter the impeller blocking some of the ports. It was easy to pull off and clean. Put it back on and it's back at 16 psi and works great! I'm heading to the store tomorrow to get a new basket.

Baskets with a simple split can be "woven" together with fishing line, which can add another few months to their life.
