Unexplained water loss

Postby susiegirl » Sun 17 Jun, 2007 08:19

OUR POOL IS LOSING WATER. IT CANT BE EXPLAINED. IT HAS DROPPED APPROX 10 INCHES IN SEVEN DAYS. WATER LEVEL IS PERFECTLY FINE UNTIL IT RAINS. DURING PREVIOUS HEAVY RAIN FALLS CAUSING POOL LEVEL TO RISE TO TOP OF COPPING, POOL HAS BEEN BACKWASHED TO LOWER WATER LEVEL. WE HAVE THEN NOTICED THAT WATER LEVEL CONTINUES TO DROP OVER DAYS. ALL CONNECTIONS FOR BACKWASH HAVE BEEN CHECKED AND ARE FINE. AFTER A FEW DAYS AND RETOPPING UP OF THE WATER LEVEL, THE WATER LEVEL STOPS DROPPING.

AFTER THIS LAST LOT OF HEAVY STORMS AND THE WATER LEVEL REACHING THE TOP OF THE COPPING - AND THIS TIME NOT BEING BACKWASHED DUE TO RECENT PROBLEMS - THE WATER LEVEL HAS NOW DROPPED APPROX. 10 INCHES IN SEVEN DAYS. WITH THE AMOUNT OF RAIN OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS, THE WATER LEVEL SHOULD BE AT THE TOP AGAIN BUT IS NOW JUST OVER THE SKIMMER BOX

WE ARE DUMBFOUNDED AS TO WHY THIS IS ONLY AFTER RAIN AND THE POOL LEVEL RISING. ANY SUGGESTIONS ANYONE

Does the water drop below the skimmer? If not, it could be the gasket on the face plate of the skimmer.

pool leak after rain

I suspect something similar with my own pool. But when several things "may or may not" be taking place at same time, I do not know what is the cause. My concern is with the reply you received from a user saying the face plate of the skimmer gasket may be the problem. What is the face plate of the skimmer? My skimmer is a Swimquip and it has an "o" ring at the BOTTOM.

Or a leak in your suction/return line. Once it get below the skimmer, it stops leaking.

I am assuming this is an in-ground pool?

YES IT IS AN INGROUND POOL.
WE TURNED THE FILTER OFF AND IT STOPPED LEAKING - BEFORE IT GOT BELOW THE SKIMMER BOX.
NOW FILTER IS BACK ON AGAIN ..BUT POOL IS NOW NOT LEAKING AND WE HAVE HAD A BREAK IN THE HEAVY RAINS.
STILL DONT KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS.

SUSPECTING MAYBE WATER BUILD UP UNDER THE POOL IS POPPING RELEASE VALVE AND INSTEAD OF LETTING WATER IN TO RELEASE PRESSURE...IS SUCKING WATER OUT.

ANY IDEAS ANYONE
